Clearing a breach with 35 drones and 100 pounds of C4

The US Army tested remote breach clearing with swarms of explosive-packed drones. No soldiers crossed the kill zone.

The US Army ran a live-fire test where they cleared a fortified breach using 35 drones and 100 pounds of C4. No human soldiers crossed the breach. The drones did. The setup was a mock obstacle belt with wire, mines, and a defensive position. Normally you send engineers forward under fire to blow gaps. Here they sent quadcopters carrying explosive charges instead. Thirty-five of them, coordinated to hit the same breach point in sequence. The interesting part is not that drones can carry explosives. That has been obvious since 2014. The interesting part is the swarm coordination. You need precise timing so the charges detonate in the right order without fratricide, and you need enough redundancy that losing five drones to jamming or ground fire does not abort the mission. This was an exercise, not a doctrine change. But the logic is clear. Breaching is the most dangerous part of any assault. If you can trade a hundred cheap drones for zero casualties, you do it. The asymmetry flips both ways. A defender with a jammer and decent air defence can kill the entire swarm for less than the cost of one drone. An attacker with better EW can punch through anyway. The engineering problem is making the swarm resilient enough that it works more often than it fails. I would bet this becomes standard practice within five years. Not because the technology is new, but because the cost of drones keeps falling and the cost of trained soldiers does not.
